Beta guide
Thanks for helping test Straylock. This takes about ten minutes, then you just live with it.
Invite only, for now. Beta links go out by email in small waves from the waitlist. Your invite holds the iPhone (TestFlight) link and the Mac download link. They're not posted on this page.
What you need
- A Mac running macOS 14 or later
- An iPhone running iOS 17 or later, with Bluetooth on
- Both within a few metres of each other to start
Install
- iPhone. Open the TestFlight link from your invite on the iPhone, install TestFlight if asked, then install Straylock. Open it once and allow Bluetooth. Leave it alone afterwards, but don't force-quit it: iOS then stops it until you open it again.
- Mac. Download the disk image from your invite, open it and drag Straylock to Applications. Open it from there. Allow Bluetooth when macOS asks.
- Lock Screen setting. On the Mac, open System Settings, Lock Screen, and set "Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off" to Immediately. Straylock locks by turning the display off, which only works with this setting.
- Pair. In Straylock on the Mac, choose Pair iPhone. macOS shows a pairing prompt on both devices. Accept it. You only do this once.
- Walk test. Put the phone in your pocket and walk to another room. Your Mac should lock within about 20 seconds. Come back and unlock with Touch ID.
What we'd like you to watch for
- False locks: the Mac locked while you sat at your desk.
- Missed locks: you walked away and it didn't lock.
- Anything confusing during setup.
Sending us your debug log
- In Straylock on the Mac, open Settings and switch on the debug log. Do this before the thing you want to report.
- After it happens, open Settings, Diagnostics, and choose Copy diagnostics.
- Email it to hello@straylock.com with the subject "Straylock beta log". Paste it into the email body.
- Add a line with your Mac and iPhone models, what happened (false lock, missed lock, other), and roughly when.
The log holds signal readings and timestamps only. You can read it before you send it, and we use it only to tune Straylock. Details are on the privacy page.
Known limits
Force-quitting the iPhone app stops it. A phone left on your desk keeps the Mac unlocked. Walls and pockets change the signal, which is the main thing we're tuning. The full list is on the home page.
Beta builds expire on a set date, shown in the app. Install the update from the same invite link when we send a new one.
